With only a few days left in 2010, your birth attention should be set to 2011.  More specifically, your attention should be set on planning what you will do to move closer to your midwifery goals in the new year. Don’t worry, it is not nearly as hard or overwhelming as you imagine. The first thing to do is determine how much time and money you have to dedicate to midwifery in the next year.  Do you have only a few hundred dollars but over 10 hours a week?  Do you have several hundred dollars but only 10 hours a month?  Be honest with yourselfRead More →

I remember a conversation with a nurse-midwife many months ago when I was deciding how to proceed with midwifery training. Her advice? Work for at least a year before beginning midwifery school. She explained that women will show up with bottles of prescription medications wanting her to tell them if they are safe in pregnancy. She felt at a disadvantage when she started as a midwife for not having a better grasp of many common medications. Here I am, less than a month to the start of the new semester, with her words still ringing in my ears. As a nurse-midwife I will be primaryRead More →

I’ve one final to go before I’m free from the required studying (at least for a few weeks).  I say required studying because during the break I will still study – I will just have control over what I study.  For me it will consist of reviewing all the midwifery materials from the previous semester and a texbook exploring the research on a variety of complementary and alternative therapies. I’ve been meaning to get on here and do some posts on the interesting topics I’ve been learning this semester.  I thought it would be a great way to review for my exam.  But the reality is I just don’t have the time, and I don’t yet feel prepared for tomorrow’s exam. I’ve almost completed my second review of all the topics, and if I finish that early enough I can start posting some of the information as another review tonight. I have had the same feeling this semester I used to get at birth conferences. The amazement at the sheer volume of information thereRead More →

I have been trying to get ready for final exams to begin next week.  Not terribly traumatic for me, just time consuming.  Anyway, I had to take a quiz tonight – and I had studied, dutifully prepared.  I even spent 45 minutes reviewing the material before I took the quiz and told myself I understood the material on every slide.  Yet, 20 questions later I found myself wondering how many I actually got right. I am not a fan of test anxiety, so sorry if you experience that.  But I am a fan of testing yourself – using the information you have learned in aRead More →
