Lactivism — Lactation Activism
Do you describe yourself as a lactivist? My answer is no. I try not to use language that is only understood by those inside the circle. I prefer to describe any work I do in words the general public will understand. I do know many birth workers who wear the term with pride. For those of you who answered no due to a lack of opportunity rather than semantic concerns, today I give you your opportunities. Check out these organizations.
The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action is a global network of organizations that promote and support breastfeeding. On their website you will find a list of organizations, as well as other resources and education materials.
The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine is an international organization of physicians promoting and supporting breastfeeding. They publish a peer-reviewed journal, host annual conferences and distribute clinical protocols to help promote optimal care.
The International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation connects researchers with policy makers to help promote excellence in research in lactation and dissemination of research findings.
La Leche League International has volunteer opportunities, educational resources, conferences and provides training in lactation for both medical personnel and lay educators.
Wellstart International provides a free lactation management self-study module. This is especially helpful in communities with very few resources.
The International Baby Food Action Network connects groups to work for universal and full implementation of the International Code. The website provides guidance on how to start a group in your region.
The Infant Feeding Action Coalition (INFACT) Canada promotes breastfeeding and optimal infant feeding practices through social action. You are probably familiar with their work — this is the organization that started the Nestle Boycott. On their website you can find updates on current actions to stay updated, or take the next step and join the organization.
