You have been experiencing contractions on and off for a couple days. Today they seem more rhythmic and have had a steady pattern for a couple hours. You are frustrated that it has taken this long for labor to start, and hope to get it moving this time. Will you:
Encourage Contractions with Nipple Stimulation
Nipple stimulation releases oxytocin, a hormone that plays a role in causing contractions. This can be a powerful technique so experts recommend that you only stimulate one breast at a time and allow at least 15 minutes to half an hour between each 2-5 minutes of stimulation.
Encourage Contractions with Intercourse
The uterus contracts as part of the female orgasm. Additionally, semen contains prostaglandins which may help to soften the cervix (the cervix must be soft for contractions to be productive).
Your midwife should be able to help you understand if what is happening to you is normal, and the options you have for handling challenges such as a slow to start labor.
